Hunter Valley Gardens is in Pokolbin, in the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges. The 25-hectare site was originally grazing land, but between 1998 and 2003 it was redeveloped and twelve international display gardens were created. They were planted with thousands of trees, shrubs and groundcovers, and linked by more than 8 kilometres of pathways.

Theme gardens

By visiting these spectacular theme gardens, you can go for a quick trip around the world without leaving Australia! Don looked at the Storybook Garden, Border Garden, Japanese Garden, Formal Garden and Chinese Garden.

Storybook Garden

In this garden, children of all ages are delighted by nursery rhyme characters such as Humpty Dumpty, Jack & Jill, Alice in Wonderland and Little Bo Peep.

Border Garden

This parterre-style garden looks much like a Persian carpet, with its clipped box hedges and seasonal colour. It is planted with petunias and marigolds in summer, and violas and pansies during winter. There are also hand-carved Indian marble water features and statues representing the four seasons.

Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden has a traditional pagoda, flowering azaleas, camellias and magnolias and ponds of lotus and water lilies. There is also an extensive planting of zoysia grass (Zoysia tenuifolia), which is used as a warm climate substitute for moss.

Formal Garden

The Formal Garden was inspired by the designs of India, China, France and the Middle East. It features topiary, beautifully manicured lawns and wide sweeping pathways, all set out in a precise geometrical pattern.

Chinese Garden

The entry to this garden is via a traditional moongate guarded by two bronze temple dogs
