Don visited the Sydney home of artist, David McKay. His work, whether on film, music, video, canvas, T-shirts or surfboards, is enormously popular and has crept into mainstream Australian culture. David lives in a renovated inner-city terrace, with a landscaped rear courtyard and a studio at the back of the property.

Unique talents

David’s distinctive paintings have been exhibited in Australia, New York, Tokyo, London, Rome and Mexico City. He is also an artist for Mambo, a surf and streetwear company. His designs can be found on Mambo T-shirts, rugs, posters, postcards, fabrics and surfboards. David regularly combines his talents as a painter with a second career in film, and has worked as a director, art director and set decorator.

Inspirational plants

David finds inspiration in his surroundings, and many of the plants growing in his garden feature in his work. They include kangaroo paws, flowering gums, grevilleas, grass trees, tree ferns, Chilean jasmine and New Zealand flax. Recently he went on an extended trip to the Tanami Desert and the Kimberleys, and started painting botanical subjects on his return. The ‘Botanical’ series is a fresh, new take on Australian wildflowers, and was recently exhibited at the Art House Gallery at Rushcutters Bay in Sydney.
