Bruce Little’s Paintings

Bruce Little is a self-taught artist. He has always enjoyed sketching and drawing, but did not take up painting seriously until 1975. At that time he took long service leave from teaching, and travelled by car around Australia. He sketched and painted for five hours every day, gaining in skill and confidence throughout the trip. Bruce lost an arm in a childhood accident, but as he explained to Don, it makes no difference to his work or lifestyle.

In 1981 Bruce again travelled and painted, this time along the full length of the east coast of Australia from Melbourne to Cooktown. He also travelled to Alice Springs, the Olgas, Kings Canyon, Katherine Gorge and Kakadu. Above all else it is the clear contrasting colours of sky, earth and vegetation that excites Bruce to paint the outback.

Backyard mural

Bruce worked for three months painting a mural behind the swimming pool in his backyard. It is a ‘Victorian’ theme with mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans), tree ferns, crimson rosellas, eastern rosellas and rainbow lorikeets. After the painting was finished Bruce pushed soil and natural features up against the mural to make it look natural, in much the same way as real features are incorporated into a trompe l’oeil.
