Matching Plants to Pots

Don visited Michele Shennen’s Willoughby Garden Centre and chatted to Michele about the very latest trends in pots. Michele explained that new ranges of pots are being imported from all over the world these days, giving gardeners much more choice. Pot shapes are changing; they are becoming taller and more angular, reflecting the move towards an architectural style of landscaping. Fashionable new colours are also available, including cobalt blue, oxblood, rust, brown, burgundy, aubergine, charcoal and silver. Plants like succulents, which have been unpopular for a long time, are now making a comeback. They really can look stunning when planted in some of the beautifully coloured pots that are now available. Michele’s advice:

Be adventurous with combinations of plants and pots, but do remember that subtlety is often the key to success.
Use the colour wheel principal to help with your colour selection (see below).
Ask the staff at your nursery to help you make the right colour choices.
Select a colour highlight in the plant (such as the stem colour or colour of the underside of the leaf) and match this to the pot colour.

Colour wheel

The colours that lie directly opposite each other on the colour wheel are contrasting. Those that lie next to each other are harmonious and complementary. Remember that all the colours in your garden should work together and complement the colours of your house and its paths.
