While there’s always some doubt cast on home remedies, alternative medicines etc this doesn’t mean they aren’t worth trying if they seem harmless enough…

The current (November) issue of the Burke’s Backyard Magazine has a number of suggested home remedies worth considering. They involve honey, Vegemite, black tea, Wasabi, molasses, talcum powder, milk & garlic.

Try dipping cuttings into honey to help keep disease away. Manuka honey is regarded as particularly good since it’s claimed to have medicinal properties.

Vegemite can also be used for the same purpose.

A Vegemite solution can also help get rid of fruit flies. The solution is poured into a clear plastic soft drink bottle with holes drilled in the bottle to allow access for the flies. A Vegemite solution can also be placed in a wide, shallow, yellow container. Whichever one is used can then be suspended from the tree using wire.

To deter ants, try sprinkling talcum power around the pot to create a barrier.

To deter possums, try black , Wasabi or molasses mixed into a solution then placed into a spray bottle and sprayed on the plants under attack at least once a week or, if it rains, spray immediately after the rain has stopped.

Milk & Garlic can also be helpful. To help minimize fungal diseases on plants a milk and water spray can be used. Garlic spray is also useful for fungal diseases as well as controlling some insects.
