Stone is a strong yet rustic material to include in the garden. ‘Burke’s Backyard’ recently visited a stone sculptor who bases his designs on historical and cross cultural themes.

The sculptor

Jock Langslow is a stone sculptor who is now making stone troughs which are functional and attractive for the home and garden. Planters, water gardens or even stone sinks can be created using these stone troughs. They are made by removing the centre from large basalt blocks which were quarried during the mid-19th century and subsequently discarded. Once the centre is chiselled out there is room for soil and plants or water.

Availability

Troughs are priced from $600 and each takes between two and three weeks to make. The troughs, which can weigh 500-600 kilograms each are delivered and installed by Jock to ensure that they are level when in position.

Currently the stone troughs are available in the Melbourne area but will be expanding. For more information about Jock Langslow stone troughs contact Penny Dunne at Florilegia Nursery, Main Street, Mt Macedon, Victoria (phone (03) 5426 4144) or call Jock Langslow direct on 018 506 910. Jock also undertakes commissioned work.
