This tropical courtyard garden showcases the skills of landscape designer, Phillip O’Malley. When working on this project Phillip had to overcome design constraints including lack of space, and a house with harsh red brick walls.

Front Garden

An old, mission brown paling fence was replaced with a new corrugated pink fence. This new fence acts as a stunning backdrop for colourful foliage plants such as cordylines (Cordyline fruiticosa). A grid of concrete pavers in the lawn provides a focus and draws the eye away from the two-storey house. The lawn area is edged with striped white mondo grass (Ophiopogon ‘Stripey White’). A Buddha on a pebble pedestal is surrounded by structural plantings of Mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata).
Golden cane palms (Dypsis lutescens) growing in bottomless, oversized barrels add intimacy to the lawn area and screen it from the house. A leftover shady space featuring a beautiful, gnarled old frangipani (Plumeria rubra var. acutifolia) has been brightened up with potted plants placed on light green Hebel pedestals. Hebel, by CSR, is a lightweight cement product.

Back Courtyard

Phillip designed the back courtyard six years ago as an intimate, outdoor living room. Hand-rendered, ochre coloured walls form a background canvas for plantings of Carpentaria palms (Carpentaria acuminata), bromeliads, spider lilies (Hymenocallis sp.), blue ginger (Dichorisandra thyrsiflora), and red and yellow heliconias (Heliconia rostrata). Splashes of bright colour throughout the garden provide accents against the ochre walls and sandstone paving: a pink Hebel arch frames the fountain, vibrantly coloured cushions are scattered on the seat in the pavilion, and the entrance gates are hot pink mini orb (a form of corrugated iron).
