Geoff Jansz demonstrated how to turn a burnt sponge cake into a delicious trifle.

You’ll need
  • 1 packet jelly crystals or ready-made jelly from the supermarket
  • sponge cake, with burnt edges cut off
  • brandy, sherry or your favourite liqueur
  • cream, whipped
  • custard, either homemade or bought from the supermarket
  • icing sugar, for dusting
Method
  1. If using jelly crystals make up as per the instructions on the packet. Refrigerate until set.
  2. Trim off the burnt edges of the sponge cake, cut into squares and place the squares into a bowl. Drizzle a little brandy, sherry or liqueur over the cake squares.
  3. Assemble the trifle in a large glass bowl or individual serving glasses. Add layers of cake, custard, jelly and whipped cream. Finish with some whipped cream and dust with icing sugar.
  4. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
