Hi!
Wondering if you know what this flower is!? I’d love to use it in my bouquet for our wedding next year. Is it a weed? And what months does it grow? It’s from my garden and seems to need lots of water to flower.
Thanks!
Emma.
Answer: Hi Emma, This is a plant called Dietes in Australia: Dietes grandiflora or the large wild iris. It comes from S. Africa and is widely used in Australia as a very tough landscaping plant. Dietes is at its best in dryish, neglected full sun positions. It has a very pretty flower plus long strap-like leaves and would be quite charming as a wedding flower. It has some weed potential in warm dry areas, but then every plant is a weed somewhere. While dietes has a long flowering period, it flowers best during Summer after good rains. You might ask at your florist to see if Dietes would be available as a cut flower for the time of your wedding. Good luck, Don.
