Floribuna Violacea and Honbeni, Rosea Won’t Flower

Nature of problem: 
My 2 10-year old Wisterias : Floribuna Violacea and Honbeni, Rosea won’t flower. 2 others nearby Floribunda Alba and Wis..Sinensis do Flower. Why ?

 

Type of Plant (if known): 
Wisteria Violacea Plena and Honbeni Rosea

 

Symptoms of Plant Illness (please try NOT to diagnose your problems yourself): 
None : Healthy leaves But no Flowers

 

Soil Type (e.g. sandy, clay or loam) OR Potting Mix Type: 
Heavy not sandy, bit of clay..

 

How often do you water the plant:
Not in winter when usually moist. Not often in Summer.

 

How many hours of sunlight does the plant get each day:
Facing North but behind a fence bordering a main road. The top gets sun all day and the roots below the fence, none.

 

What type of plant is it:
As above; Climbing vine

 

How long since you planted it:
10 to 12 years ago.

 

Have you fertilised? If so, with what and when:
Sometimes with blood & bone or liquid Aquasol and Phostrogen

 

Is the plant indoors or outdoors: 
Outdoor

 

Is the plant in a pot or in the ground: 
ground

 

What other treatments have you given the plant: 
None. Not sick.

Same as above. I wonder if it’s a sterile graft as I bought them from Kmart.

 

Answer:Hi Annie.  This is a VERY common problem and it is ALWAYS caused by fertilisers. Wisterias (and Bougainvilleas) will bolt to rampant growth if fed nitrogenous fertilisers. That’s what you did. Use some Thrive Flower & Fruit to get it to flower next year – it’s too late for this year. BUT you must not fertilise within 5 metres fall around for other plants. EG rose food applied nearby will stop the wisteria flowering.  Don
