Don’s Tips: Vegies

Vegies

It’s time to look at the vegie garden. Chuck out any tired old vegies and replant with seed of beetroot, Chinese cabbage or Chinese greens, lettuce, silverbeet and many others. Whatever is available at the local nursery and hardware store will grow well.

Any vegies that just seem a bit flat need fertilizing. Use a liquid feed like Thrive or Aquasol to perk them up. The ones that need this treatment are tomatoes, sweet corn, silverbeet, cucumbers, capsicums and chillies.

If your soil is looking dry and tired, dig in well rotted compost and some chook manure. Water it well and leave it for 2-3 days prior to planting new vegies.

You can also plant strawberries now – they are the best of all berries to grow at home.

Lastly, prune back any long, rampant growth on herbs – only the fresh, young growth is really good.

Home-grown produce is always best!
