Don’s Tips: Tomato Blossom Rot

Tomato Blossom Rot

I’ve had many emails recently from home gardeners with awful black rounded spots on the bottom of their tomatoes – about 10-50¢ size or even bigger.

This is caused by uneven watering. It’s called blossom end rot and it appears after you let the poor tomato plants dry out on hot days.

Water tomatoes deeply with a sprinkler (i.e. for 30 minutes or so) twice a week during February. Add some lime to the soil – use Eco Flo liquid lime. It’s cheaper and better to use.

Then mulch the soil surface with lucerne hay or pea straw.

Make a note on your fridge to water, say, on Mondays & Thursdays so that you don’t forget.

Remover lower leaves from tomatoes too to avoid diseases spreading.

A little care now will see you making salsa, tomato soup and other adventurous creations of your own from your glut of tomatoes.

Hooroo! Don.
