Don’s Tips: Rhododendrons

Red flowers

Rhododendrons

Did you know that there’s a native species of red-flowering rhododendron.  Well there is. It comes from mountaintops in Queensland and has actually been divided into several different species.

Rhododendron lochiae is our native birth flower for this month too.  It’s an easy plant to grow in a pot or in the ground.

This is one of the group of rhododendrons called vireyas:  most of the other species of vireyas come from New Guinea (which was part of mainland Australia up until around 10,000 years ago).

Rhododendron lochiae is sometimes available from nurseries, but you may need to search a bit first.
