Don’s Tips: Potatoes

Potatoes

Of all the food crops you can grow at home, potatoes are probably the most rewarding and fascinating.

Firstly, potatoes get virtually no pest or disease problems – so are very low maintenance.

Right now, you can buy seed potatoes from nurseries or you can grow potatoes from your local fruit shop’s range.

Even leftover potatoes in the fridge or cupboard will do.

It’s best to grow potatoes in the ground in a vegie garden.  Dig a hole and plant the potatoes about 20cm deep (8” or so).

Mulch the surface with hay or straw or compost.

Each potato will produce around 1 kg of potatoes for harvest in January or February as the plants die down.

Don’t over-fertilise them – just sit back and wait for the potatoes to form!

–   Do try it – it’s great fun for the kids.
