Don’s Tips: Great Weeds

Great weeds

Weeds are almost always mentioned in a negative way, yet they can be both useful and very beautiful.

The mixture of sulphur-yellow flowers of cape weed with the purple of Patterson’s Curse in many areas of western Australia is truly beautiful.  The ground is washed with complimentary colours.

Many grassy weeds produce seeds for native finches.  Guinea grass, panic veldt grass, winter grass and summer grass all produce bird-feeding seeds.

Wild olive trees in South Australia can be heart stoppingly beautiful – and the wild olives taste far better than the larger cultivated ones.

So spare a thought for your local weeds.  Most of them are here to stay, not matter what we do.

So why not sit back and enjoy them!
