Don’s Tips: Fixing Posts In The Ground

Fixing A Post In The Ground

Sooner or later most of us will need to set a post in the ground. To hold up a gate or a letter box or a cubby house or set of swings for the kids.

It is so easy to do these days. First, dig a hole about 60cm (2 ft.) deep. Get 2 or 3 bits of scrap timber about 1-2 metres long for bracing later on. Get some rapid set concrete mix too – about 3-4 bags per hole.

Now put your post in the hole and as your offsider holds the post, put the bags of rapid set concrete into the hole, adding water as you go. A small amount of mixing of water and concrete will help.

Now use the scrap timber as lean-to supports by partly nailing each one to the post to form struts.

Use a trowel to roughly level the concrete about 2-4 cm below ground level.

The concrete will set in about 20-30 minutes, but I usually leave the struts on overnight.

It’s that easy.

Hooroo! Don.
