Don’s Tips: Dwarf Citrus

Dwarf Citrus

Dwarf Citrus

Without any doubt, citrus are the best edible plans for most Australian gardens.

It simply isn’t a real Aussie backyard unless you have a lemon tree or an orange tree or a mandarin tree.

But be warned:  most citrus trees grow way too tall.  After 5 years or so, the fruit are up 5 metres or so above ground.  You can prune them back severely if you wish: the pruning is best done in autumn – but you need to paint the bark white with whitewash to prevent the bark from burning.

… so you can see that it is FAR FAR better to buy DWARF CITRUS trees.  You can get dwarf oranges, lemons, limes, mandarins etc.  ONLY BUY the dwarf varieties.  The fruit are identical, only the tree is smaller.

A light pruning annually after removing the last fruit is still a good idea even for dwarfs.  Light pruning does not involve painting the truck white.
