Don’s Tips: Dry Summer & Pots

Dry Summer & Pots

This has been a truly awful summer in many areas of Australia. Many pot plants are very sick.

On ONE really hot day –if the plant’s potting mix dries out for even ONE HOUR – the mix tends to become water repelling …And then it simply can’t be re-wetted.

What do you do? Well the best idea is to immerse then entire pot in a large trough of water or even in a garden pond for about half an hour. This may force the water into the potting mix.

If the pot is just too big, consider leaning it over and temporarily plugging up the drain holes with plasticine or Blu-Tack. Then turn the pot back upright and fill it with wetting agent in water for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes turn it on its side and remove the plasticine and sit the plant back upright. Follow this up with a wetting agent too.

Good luck.
