Don’s Tips: Drainage Problems

Drainage problems – water pooling in a badly drained lawn

Over winter, gardens stay much wetter than during the warmer months.  This makes gardening easier as the plants need less watering.

It also makes winter a good time to sort out drainage problems on your block.  Almost all gardens have a wet spot and some gardens are often wet everywhere.  This can be fixed.

Next time it rains heavily, put up your umbrella and go out in the rain to watch the ebb and flow of water.  Try to discover where surface water comes from – is there a leaking drain pipe or does the water come in from next door.

Try to discover where the water goes when it finally does go away.

Sketch a rough plan of your backyard showing water flow during rainy periods.

Now you can plan to remove humps that dam water, or maybe you can install some drains in CRITICAL areas.

Try it – it works.
