Don’s Tips – Backyard Farm – Vegie Gardens

As part of your backyard farms project, today we’re looking at vegie gardens.

These can be raised beds made of corrugated iron, or made of railway sleepers. Vegie gardens can be made in the ground with paving around each section to make planting and harvesting really easy.

On page 190 of my book Organic** we look at potager gardens which are a very attractive way of growing vegies in gridded garden beds.

You could also choose to grow a vertical vegie garden. These are grown against sunny walls and the kits are available at nurseries or hardware stores.

And don’t forget that you can grow fruit trees flat against a wall by a process called ‘espalier’. This is a HUGE space saver with all fruit trees including oranges, lemons and peaches.

Your vegie garden must have compost added to its soil. If you don’t have enough, go to the local horseracing track to see if they give horse manure away for nothing.

Every year your soil will get better and better.

Next time we’ll look at when to pick or harvest fruit and vegies.

Hooroo, Don
