Serruria florida

In the Garden > Flowering Plants & Shrubs

Serrurias are evergreen shrubs from South Africa. There are about 55 species and they belong to the Proteaceae, or protea family. Many Australian native plants belong to this same family.

Blushing Bride (Serruria florida)

In our segment Don looked at Serruria florida, which grows to around 1.5m (5’) tall, and has delicate, needle-like leaves. In spring it produces papery white bracts, or floral leaves, surrounding feathery tufts of white to pinkish flowers. ‘Sugar ‘n’ Sprice’ is a variety with pink flowers and deep, rose pink colouring on the white bracts.

Growing serrurias

In most areas of Australia, serrurias grow best in pots or tubs. Use a free-draining potting mix and do not over fertilise (an Australian native potting mix would be suitable, and an Australian native fertiliser used only at half strength).

S. florida costs around $17 for 140mm (6") pots.
