Tractor Tyre Sandpit

Don showed how to make a quick and easy sandpit from an old tyre and some sand. This is a great way to recycle worn out tyres, which can be obtained free of charge from tyre distributors. Old tyres are safe to use provided the rubber has not worn through, exposing steel mesh.

You will need

• old tyre (tractor tyres are ideal)
• scrubbing brush and/or wire brush
• paintbrush
• 1 litre of water-based paint for flexible surfaces
• washed sand

What to do

1. Use the scrubbing brush or wire brush to clean the tyre thoroughly, removing all loose material. Allow to dry.
2. Apply a coat of water-based flexible paint, such as Viponds TautFlex. Chessie chose a blue colour (‘Dinkum Blue’). Leave to dry, then apply a second coat.
3. Place the tyre in position, then fill with washed sand. We used Sydney Sand, but your local supplier can advise on the best sand to use for a sandpit. (Tip: it’s a good idea to put a cover over the sandpit to stop cats fouling the sand.)
