Elizabeth Scholes is an artist who has found an interesting use for abandoned chrome hubcaps. She makes them into clocks. Collecting them from roadsides, wreckers and anywhere else she can get them. First they get a good scrub with a rust remover, then the hubcaps are de-greased and finally they are polished with chrome polish and an old rag. Any symbols on the hubcap are painted before the paper clock template is put on top of it to determine where the hour dots should be attached. A hole is drilled through the centre of the hubcap and the clock hands and mechanism connected. Just put in some batteries and it's ready to go. |
There are hubcaps from all sorts of vehicles, with Fords and Holdens being the most popular. There are also Mercedes, Chevrolets, VWs and even an old Humber hubcap. Elizabeth also makes a diverse range of flower, rocket and other interesting shaped clocks. Further information Elizabeth Scholes sells her hubcap clocks at local markets, Yorktown Square Markets, Launceston, Tasmania, from 8.30am-2pm. They cost between $30-$40 depending on how expensive the car model is. For more information Elizabeth can be contacted on (03) 6331 7368. |
